Mackinac Island recap and what I wore!

We have just had a great weekend on Mackinac Island for the long Labor Day weekend! It was a great time to relax and unplug (literally there was hardly any wifi anywhere on the island) and get outside and enjoy the fantastic weather. We had time in the 60s and 70s with a few days in the 50s. It was MAJOR Fall Vibes and I loved every minute of it.

If you are unfamiliar with the island, it is located in northern Michigan, where Lake Michigan meets Lake Huron. There are NO cars or motorized vehicles on the island and it is literally the most charming step back in time. Horses, buggies and bikes are the name of the game - we even saw Amazon parcels being delivered by horse-drawn carriage! We drove and walked endlessly which made up for all of the fudge we ate - fudge is another trademark of the island. The island is only 3 square miles, 80% of which is a state park. There is also a large fort on the island that was occupied by the British in the War of 1812. So there is just a lot of history on the island.

We stayed at Mission Point Resort. This hotel had some advantages and disadvantages. Some of the pros were the place that was away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street yet close enough to everything. Plus the large lawned area with chairs and some really great restaurants was a great place to relax. The staff was incredibly nice and funny and we had great customer service. But the downsides were that the hotel was old and historic which is charming, but also had downsides like poor wifi and creaky floors. All the rooms were recently renovated and were very cute.

One of the best parts of the island is how active you can be all the time. We walked about 6 miles a day and also cycled around the perimeter (8 miles) of the island one day. There are tons of bikes to rent, but if you get there late the choices are slim! So my husband and I got stuck on a tandem bike - it was literally the last one left!

We had the best autumn weather with warm sun and some cool shade. I loved breaking out sweaters and jackets. I thought I was overdoing it by packing cashmere and quilted jackets, but they were 100% necessary.

Of course we had booked a kayak tour on the coldest and windiest day. Brrr! We were cold and wet but had so much fun watching this amazing view of Arch Rock. We hiked to the arch the day before and it was over 200 steps up. Yikes

Of course, no trip to the island is complete without a quick stop at the Grand Hotel. As one of the most historic and beautiful hotels in the whole country, this place is a must-see. We had lunch at the Jockey Club which was great fun - the surroundings are second to none.
